More than decoration. Contemporary art jewelry as desire, discourse, and discovery.

Zhipeng Wang

Zhipeng Wang’s Heart of Ocean #24 achieves a profound synthesis of natural beauty and cultural introspection within the intimate scale of a brooch. The work centers on a gracefully contoured pink shell, its iridescent surface shimmering with delicate gradients of rose and luminous pearl tones that respond subtly to shifting light. Two luminous Akoya pearls are thoughtfully positioned within the upper contours of the heart-like form, serving as focal points that evoke both ocular presence and emotional depth. Sterling silver and stainless steel wire form a restrained structural framework, allowing the organic materials to command attention while ensuring wearability and balance.

The physical presence of the brooch reveals Wang’s exceptional sensitivity to material interplay and proportion. The shell’s inherent curvature and lustrous texture impart a sense of organic vitality and visual depth, elegantly contrasted by the perfect spherical forms of the pearls. Understated metal elements provide precise yet unobtrusive support, emphasizing the tactile and optical qualities of the primary materials. This refined composition results in an object that feels wearable yet suggestive of broader sculptural concerns. At approximately 86 x 52 x 12 mm, the brooch masterfully balances lightness with sculptural presence, rewarding sustained observation of its nuanced surfaces and material dialogues.

Heart of Ocean #24 extends the artist’s deep engagement with themes of identity, memory, and cross-cultural exchange. Born in Anhui, China, in 1996 and shaped by studies at the China Academy of Art and the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, Wang consistently draws upon materials imbued with cultural significance. Here, the oceanic references and marine elements evoke fluidity, transformation, and the connective power of global waters. The heart-shaped composition further infuses the work with layers of emotional and narrative resonance, inviting reflection on personal heritage within an increasingly interconnected world.

Through Heart of Ocean #24, Zhipeng Wang reaffirms his position as a compelling voice in contemporary art jewelry. The brooch exemplifies his ability to transform culturally resonant materials into poetic contemporary statements, aligning with celebrated series such as Tea Brick and Stone Gambling. As the recipient of major international awards—including the Herbert Hofmann Prize (2026)—Wang continues to bridge heritage and innovation with clarity and depth. This work stands as both a refined wearable object and a contemplative meditation on the oceans that unite, inviting wearers and viewers alike to consider the layered currents of their own identities.
