More than decoration. Contemporary art jewelry as desire, discourse, and discovery.

Karin Roy Andersson

Karin Roy Andersson’s Loboria I brooch presents a careful study in both material transformation and natural observation. Constructed from recycled plastics—specifically soap and body lotion bottles—along with steel and thread, the piece demonstrates Andersson’s ongoing interest in environmental consciousness and surface texture. Measuring 14 × 11.5 × 5 cm, Loboria I occupies a scale large enough to reference the natural world while maintaining the intimacy of a wearable object.

The layered green elements mimic the overlapping surfaces of leaves or scales, and visually reference both botanical structures and animal forms. The work’s tactile quality is emphasized through the use of softened plastic, shaped into gentle curves and stitched together with visible thread, suggesting care and handwork. The steel pin mechanism on the back is minimally invasive, preserving the visual integrity of the form while providing functionality.

Andersson draws inspiration from trees. particularly the individuality suggested by bark texture, form, and age. In this piece, the dense layering of forms recalls the complexity of tree bark and foliage, offering a quiet metaphor for time, endurance, and ecological interconnection. The reuse of discarded plastics further underscores a commitment to sustainability and reflection on material life cycles.

Loboria I continues Andersson’s broader body of work that merges found or everyday materials with processes rooted in craft. Her brooches serve not only as decorative forms, but also as reflective objects that invite the viewer to consider both nature and human impact.
